The
Revolutionary United Front (R.U.F.) slaughtered its way into Sierra
Leone's capital of Freetown. They murdered civilians, burned
homes, and hacked off the limbs of innocent children.
Edwin Koi did not hide from the
approaching rebel army but instead grabbed his old video camera and
went directly into the battle zone. Three years later on a back
street in his tiny West African country Koi gave his war tape to
filmmaker Trent Harris and told him to "show the world".
Harris' documentary, which includes portions of Koi's remarkable tape,
sheds some light on the dark past of Sierra Leone, a country cursed
with vast diamond mines, child soldiers, and cannibal militias.
A note to journalists and travelers
to Sierra Leone. Contact Edwin Koi. He is honest. He
has the heart of a lion and he seems to know just about everyone in his
country.
Make him you guide. Pay him well. You will not regret
it. His phone number is 076-742-610.
