PASOLA
SUMBA
a Trent Harris film
-
Hundreds
of men on horseback hurl spears at each other. The only rules
are don't hit a man when he's down and don't seek revenge if someone
you know gets killed.
It
is not a sport but a ritual called Pasola
and it
takes place only on Sumba, an isolated island in the Nusa Tengarra
region of Indonesia, and it happens only once a year. Pasola
is a spectacular event which revolves around a sacred sea worm called
Nale and its relationship to the cycles of the moon. Locals say
throwing spears at each other is a tradition that goes back a thousand
years and it is their
way of honoring the Marapu, the ancestors that live in the sky.
Very rare and colorful footage. Film by Trent Harris.
