Some have called it an enormous
pile of junk. Others claim it is the workings of a mad man.
But to Chief Rolling Mountain Thunder it was his home and his "Monument
to the Great Spirit". Constructed over decades the Chief used bed
springs, pop bottles, airplane struts, wagon wheels, car parts, tons of
cement, tubs of paint, and anything else he could lay his hands on to
build his vision. His Thunder Mountain Monument rivals the famed
Watts Towers as one of America's foremost outsider artist
creations. In 1978 the Chief sat down to talk with filmmaker
Trent Harris about his monument which sits just off the freeway near
Imlay Nevada. He explained that its primary function was "to keep
the outside out and the inside in". He was most proud that to his
son his Thunder Mountain Monument resembled a giant birtday cake.
This film offers
a rare glimpse into the mind of an untrained genius working and living
completely outside of society.
